Our October episode is here and is haunted by our first ever guest-host, Dave Taylor! Dave is a good friend of ours whom you may know from his company Dave Taylor Miniatures and as the co-host of Build Paint Play – A Podcast about Tabletop Gaming, or his previous work as editor-in-chief of White Dwarf Magazine and then Wargames Illustrated. Dave’s been a serious Horus Heresy enthusiast for years and we were thrilled to have him take part.
We chat a little about what everyone’s been up to, notably Dave’s time at the NOVA Open and judging the Capital Palette painting competition. We talk about scale modeling vs miniatures painting hobbying and of course, we continue to speculate about Legions Imperialis and its still unknown release date. While talking all things Epic, we drool over Broncofish’s GrimDark Terrain STLs, perfect for both Titanicus and Legions Imperialis whenever it may arrive. Moving on, we talk about the recently released Exemplary Battles PDF, The Battle for Felweather Keep with its rules for corrupted knights (none of us have fully read them but that doesn’t stop us from talking!) and then drift into some discussion of our observations of competitive play in games of Horus Heresy. Naturally, we indulge in some obligatory discussion of Warhammer: The Old World with Steve before talking about the imminently releasing Mk III armor kits and Deredeo Dreadnought in plastic! We chat a little about the recently revealed resin Fulgrim model and the book in which he will be included before we get into the meat of our episode; planning and painting a Horus Heresy army the Dave Taylor way.
Dave is starting to plan a companion volume to his first published book, Armies & Legions & Hordes, and he’s been giving thought to a new rubric by which to plan your themes and schemes around whether they are “Obvious, Adjacent, or Fringe.” We talk about this approach and how to make an army feel like its yours from the ground up.
Finally, we conclude with some mail call. As always, we want to hear from you for next episode’s mail call, so find us on Facebook to ask!
