In this ongoing series we present an accessible and thematic starting list for each of the 18 Space Marine Legions. Each list utilizes the Age of Darkness starter set as a foundation from which to build a 2,000 point list using as few additional components as possible from readily available official plastic kits.

This latest instalment in our Starter Series brings us to the V Legion, the White Scars! This list is pretty standard for our Starter Series, using the Pride of the Legion Rite of War and seeing a big blocks of Tactical Squads supported by Cataphractii terminators in a Spartan as your heaviest punch alongside a Lascannon armed Contemptor Dreadnought. However, it does vary a little in that instead of a second 20-man Tactical squad it uses a smaller 10 man squad alongside a 10 man Support Squad armed with Volkite Calivers to give you a little more heavy punch. These smaller squads should let you put pressure on your opponent from multiple vectors, playing well with the +1 Movement characteristic that all White Scars get from Swift of Action. As well, the Praetor model in this set makes a great Storm Seer, making this one of our only Starter Series armies to feature a psyker!

As a final thought, the White Scars are one of those Legions that people seem to think can’t be appropriately played without a bunch of specialist models, in this case, bikes. Outriders and jetbikes are certainly the most iconic part of a White Scars force but even in the fiction, most White Scars are just dudes with bolt guns and power armor! Consider a force like this a great way to stick your toe into a bigger White Scars collection that depicts the full panoply of this venerable legion’s war machine.
